How To Hold Space For One’s Own Marginalized Identity
What does it mean to ‘hold space? How can you honor your own lived experience without getting into an ‘oppression competition’? What is the importance of “both/and” in justice and equity work?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill discusses the concept of intersectionality and how it relates to power and privilege in our society. She discusses what it means to hold space not only for one’s own lived experience, but also for the lived experience of people with different identities from our own, and that honoring one’s own experience should not take away from the lived experience of other people with marginalized identities. Jill talks about the importance of bringing one’s full self into any interaction, while at the same time being aware of how the dynamics of power and privilege come with us everywhere we go and how ‘centering oneself’ can cause harm.
